Building the Tiny House

Headed to Crtical Massive 2009

A few pics as we headed out to our local area Burning Man event, Crtical Massive. It was held near Mt. Vernon - a 2 hour drive from where the tiny house currently lives.

I'll admit - I was scared poopless about this trip. Would it be too much strain on my van? What about the brakes - since although the trailer has brakes I have not checked them and hooked them up. Would things blow off of the house? Would the axels break? yikes - so much to worry about!

But she towed beautifully - on the freeway no less. Due to her hieght (13' 6") I really had to go on the freeway. We did up to 60 miles an hour. Sure I was nervous and gave myself a lot of space on the road - but we did just fine. And got many a smile and thumbs up on route.

Inside: a day of flooring and inner wall siding

Busy day!

I laid out the flooring. My friends gave me their scrap/leftover bamboo flooring and that fit perfectly in the bathroom. I had bought cork flooring from Habitat for Humanity awhile back (just cuz I loved it) and when I laid it out - I found I didin't have quite enough. A quick trip to Second Use and I found a box of a nice light colored wood flooring that fit nicely in the kitchen area, allowing me to finish that project.

I had scored a large batch of inside wood siding a ways back. It was pretty darned torn up  - and I really had to scrounge through it to find enough good pieces to work - but I did! By cuttig off the "bad" parts I had just enough to cover my lower walls. I'd say I ended up using half of what I'd picked up. It looks like Jole (the owner of the yard my house is in) has a use for the rest of the scraps. Good stuff.

She's looking good - and it's really nice to get a real feel for the space. As a matter of fact, I spent my first night in her on the fourth of July. It was like camping - but better ;)

Getting to the guts

Kiwi crates! They are perfect temporary cabinets and bookshelves.

I am gearing up for Critical Massive that takes place July 15th-19th this year. I really want to be able to show people how I'll be using the space in the tiny house - and how comfortable 117 square feet can really be. So I've been creating temporary cabinets and furniture until I have the time/money/energy to build the "real" pieces. The farm has always had an abundance of kiwi crates since they are just too cool to throw out - but not the right proportions to use for too many other things. I've been told I can have as many as I want. They are PERFECT for this!

I've also started framing out the walls inside. You can see where the bathroom will be now - with the toilet set in place and bamboo flooring installed.

I continue to have visitors - as you can see Laurell in her tutu came to check things out. She was quite impressed!
